No matter where you are in your career journey, a few simple job hunting strategies can help you in your job search.
Research and Preparation
Before you begin the process of filling out job applications, sending out your resume, and going on interviews, decide what you want in a job and in an employer.
Research what a particular job would entail as well as the culture and work environment of a particular company. You may also want to take geography into consideration; in other words, you may want to seek out an area where your skills are in demand and research jobs there.
For a technical communication job search, a history of courses in areas such as technical writing, web design, and programming can be beneficial. Experience with software such as Microsoft Word and FrameMaker, as well as Web production tools, can make it easier to break into the field of technical writing.
Application Process
Focus on achievements in your resume to highlight what has made you successful so far. It is also a good idea to alter your resume for each job application to focus on the qualities that a specific employer is looking for in a candidate.
Visual communication is especially important in fields such as technical communication. Demonstrate competency in this area during your job search by using principles such as balance and alignment in your resume design.
A cover letter can provide additional information about why you are a good fit for the job you are seeking. Additionally, some jobs will require a writing sample as part of the screening process. Ensure that documents you may submit as a sample communicate ideas clearly and effectively. An online portfolio of your work is a plus.
Networking and Communication
LinkedIn is essentially an online resume, and it has become an important tool in networking and job hunting. Therefore, it is important that you have a profile and keep it complete and up-to-date. Don’t be afraid to seek out connections and actively network with them.
As smartphones have become omnipresent, some employers have begun using nontraditional methods of contacting prospective employees. They may use texting, video chat apps such as Zoom and Skype, or even social media to contact you. It is important to keep up with these newer technologies in order to remain aware of and fully receptive to opportunities.
It can also be beneficial to follow up with prospective employers in the real world after applying for a job online. This can help prove that you are a serious candidate.
As a Technical Communication professional, connecting with other tech comm professionals in this vast profession keeps you up on changing trends in this ever-evolving field.

Interviews
Preparation can go a long way when it comes to interviewing for a position. Practice answering the typical interview questions, such as your strengths and weaknesses. You can also prepare yourself for general topics that may come up in an interview, such as teamwork and organization. Reflect on your experience with these topics and how you could explain that experience. Another effective method for interview preparation is coming up with examples of successes you have had at previous jobs to illustrate how you will be successful at your new job.
